Previous FBI director James the ex-FBI chief has pleaded not guilty to providing misleading information to US legislators and impeding a lawmaking procedure.

His lawyer entered the response acting as his counsel in a US district court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on mid-week.

His attorney stated he would seek to have the case dismissed for several factors including that his defendant, a critic of President Donald Trump, was being singled out.

James Comey was formally accused just days after Donald Trump pressured his chief prosecutor to take action against him.

Legal Proceedings

During the hearing on mid-week, his attorney the legal representative informed the magistrate they planned to file several motions to dismiss the proceedings before a court case, arguing the legal action was vindictive and that a US attorney was improperly assigned to take over the legal matter.

The former director's case was originally overseen by the original attorney, who left his position under scrutiny from Donald Trump after his investigation into an additional opponent - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to file indictments.

Judicial Environment

The former director came across in good spirits as he walked into the legal venue on Wednesday, speaking with his attorneys and being lighthearted. He was accompanied by his wife, Mrs Failor and child Maureen Comey, a federal prosecutor who the former government dismissed.

Following the reading to the court recite his rights and the pair of allegations against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, Mr Comey was asked if he understood the allegations.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you," he informed the court.

Previous Events

James Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from four years and was terminated about a few months into Trump's initial presidency as president. At the period, the director was directing an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any relationships between Moscow and the election effort.

While in office, Mr Comey sparked a negative reaction from liberal politicians when he announced just days before the national vote that he was probing presidential nominee Clinton's use of a private email server. Indictments against Clinton were never brought, leading to disapproval from Republicans as well.

Present Charges

Government attorneys claim James Comey lied to the legislature during a legislative proceeding in 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the Clinton investigation as well as the election interference investigation. They allege he misled the legislative body by saying he had not permitted someone at the FBI to release to media organizations data about the government examinations.

Prosecutors also accuse James Comey of "wrongfully trying to sway, block and impede" the legislative group by making false statements to it.

Personal Comments

Through a recording James Comey shared to his Instagram after he was charged, he declared he was innocent and charged Donald Trump of behaving like a "autocrat".

"Our household have been aware for years that there are consequences to standing up to Donald Trump," he said. "We will not live on our kneeling."
"I'm innocent," he added. "So let's have a legal proceeding."

The charges against Mr Comey came after Trump shared on online platforms demanding his top legal official, Ms Bondi, take legal action against the former director and others.
