This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like standard body horror, but within Together lies a profound examination about our choices in loving each other.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his social circle. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that come with any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
