UK PM Commands Probe into MI5 over False Evidence
UK's Prime Minister has commissioned a renewed investigation into how the Security Service submitted misleading information to judicial bodies regarding discussions with a media outlet.
The Premier's direction is in response to demands from the judicial body and oversight body, which both dismissed the intelligence agency's justifications about the situation.
Case Centers on Neo-Nazi Agent
This matter centers on a far-right government agent codenamed an unnamed source who exploited his MI5 role to intimidate his girlfriend, whom he assaulted with a large knife.
Earlier this week, the Premier contacted the Investigatory Powers Commissioner Sir Brian Leveson directing him to conduct a fresh investigation.
"I've formally directed a instruction to the Commissioner to initiate this investigation immediately."
The Prime Minister said that the tribunals "plan to employ the findings of this inquiry to decide their future proceedings in relation to the matter of the informant."
Sir Keir noted that the oversight bodies had determined that the Security Service's investigations into the misleading testimony "exhibited serious procedural deficiencies."
Revelations and Regret
Earlier this year, a media outlet disclosed that MI5 had misled three courts while explaining its handling of the violent MI5 agent, whom the organization had sought to expose in a 2022 investigation.
Arguing for confidentiality, the Security Service told the courts it had stuck to its guideline of not verifying or disputing sources' information.
However, MI5 had disclosed the informant's status in phone calls with a journalist, as it sought to discourage the reporter not to investigate him. The service persistently upheld its viewpoint until evidence showing it was false was produced, including a documented call of one of the exchanges.
Following these revelations, MI5's Director General expressed regret. Two internal investigations then took place which exonerated the service and its personnel of knowing failure, claiming the inaccurate information was due to mistakes and inaccurate recall.
Judicial Bodies Dismiss Explanations
However, recently, a panel of judicial officials determined that the "inquiries carried out by the Security Service to date suffer from significant process flaws" and that "they cannot trust their findings."
The judges said it would be "unwise" to decide whether to initiate judicial defiance measures against any MI5 officers before a additional review was conducted.
Subsequently the period, the legal authority also dismissed the agency's justifications and requested a comprehensive probe.
Fresh Probe Commissioned
The renewed probe will be carried out under the authority of the regulatory head, who has oversight of MI5's intelligence gathering. His agency was also given false evidence by MI5 in the matter.
A representative stated: "Government officials are concerned that false testimony was submitted to the High Court and oversight authority. The chief of the Security Service has justifiably said sorry for this serious failing, both publicly and to the judicial authorities."
"Each tribunal found that additional inquiry was required to establish how inaccurate information ended up being presented to them. The authorities accepted their suggestions and the PM has instructed the appointed official – the Investigatory Powers Commissioner – to head this probe. It would be unwise to speak additionally until it is concluded."
